The best ways to identify your skin type

Our skin's needs change with age, health problems, smoking, stress, sun exposure, hormonal changes and even with the change of seasons.
Determining your skin type is absolutely necessary to ensure proper care and treatment of your skin. Knowing your skin type will help you pick the right products for your skin and helps you to provide your skin with the best care...

There are 5 basic skin types:
   1- Dry Skin
   2- Normal Skin
   3- Oily Skin
   4- Combination Skin
   5- Sensitive Skin

1-Dry Skin: is an uncomfortable condition marked by scaling, itching, and cracking. It can occur for a variety of reasons. Some people have naturally dry skin and may experience frequent symptoms. However, even the oiliest skin can get dry at times. The earlier dermatitis is diagnosed and treated the better.

Tips for dry skin:
  • Don't use hot water.(removes your natural skin oils more quickly).
  • Use a gentle cleanser (wash your face just once a day at night, in the morning rinse your face with cool water).
  • Limit time in the shower.(spending more than 10mn, the water will leaves your skin less hydrated).
  • Moisturize right after bath.(apply a moisturizer while the skin is still damp).

2-Normal Skin: displays a delicate texture and a rosy, clean surface, with fine pores. There are no apparent scars, oily patches or flaky areas. Sebum production, moisture content, keratinisation and desquamation are nicely balanced.

Tips for normal skin :
  • Clean your skin with a mild baby soap and water twice a day.
  • Apply mild freshener after every cleansing with a mild freshener to keep your pores tight.
  • Always use an astringent with a low alcohol content.
  • Use makeup products that contain sunscreen to avoid early drying, aging effects of direct sun heat.
  • Use a mild, oil based moisturizer under your make up to retain normal moisture.

3-Oily skin: is characterised by an increased amount of lipids on the skin surface due to overactive sebaceous glands. It is shiny and thick, often with enlarged pores. Oily skin is prone to blackheads and other blemishes. It occurs more often in men than in women, and it predominantly affects adolescents and younger persons.

Tips for oily skin :
  • Choose a mild, unscented soap to wash your skin.
  • Toners are an effective way to control oil if used properly.
  • Even if you have oily skin, a sunscreen is essential for preventing wrinkles and reducing red marks.
  • Always remove cosmetics before going to sleep.

4-Combination skin: is rather dry in some parts of the body and oily in other localisations. Mixed facial skin tends toward dryness on the cheeks and around the eyes while being oily in the t-zone (nose, forehead, chin). The dry parts and the oily parts require different skin care regimens.

Tips for combination skin:
  • Stop using soaps for your delicate facial skin.
  • Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing, you can expect flawless skin in no time.
  • Apply a light moisturizer which moisturizes the dry areas and mattifies the oily areas on your face.
  • To get added benefits use a night cream.
  • Exfoliation is required to get rid of white heads, black heads and dead skin cells.

5-Sensitive skin: has a tendency to develop swollen or broken capillaries as well as allergies. It also sunburns easily. Patients tend to describe their skin as “sensitive” if it frequently reacts with redness, itching, burning or dryness to the topical application of skin care products. It feels tight and drawn without moisturizer and tends to have fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

Tips for sensitive skin :
Never use a bar of soap to cleanse your skin. Keep your skin care products cold. Protect your skin with sunscreen.
